The 2027 PTO Calendar: How to Get 36 Days Off Using 16 PTO Days
The 2027 PTO Calendar at a Glance
There are nine windows in 2027 where four PTO days give you nine consecutive days off:
- January 19 to 22, around MLK Jr. Day
- February 16 to 19, around Presidents’ Day
- June 1 to 4, around Memorial Day
- June 14 to 17, around Juneteenth
- July 6 to 9, around Independence Day
- September 7 to 10, around Labor Day
- October 12 to 15, around Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples Day
- November 8, 9, 10 and 12, around Veterans Day
- November 22, 23, 24 and 26, around Thanksgiving
Use four of them and you are away for 36 days on 16 PTO days. December is bigger still, at 16 days off for eight.
If you’re planning your 2027 vacation days, the calendar gives you several opportunities to turn a handful of PTO days into much longer stretches away from work. In 2027, there are nine windows where four PTO days can give you nine consecutive days off, plus a December stretch where eight PTO days can give you 16 days away.
Every October we do the same thing. We open next year’s calendar, look at however many PTO days we’re getting, and try to figure out how to turn a small number into a year that feels bigger than it is.
That’s what this 2027 vacation calendar is. Nine of the eleven federal holidays next year land in a spot where four PTO days get you nine days off. December is the outlier and the best of the bunch, since four days gets you ten days off and eight gets you sixteen.
We put all of it in one place below, along with how we decide which windows are worth using when the number of days is fixed. There’s also a free planner you can fill out together, right on your phone or printed out.
2027 Federal Holidays
The federal government recognizes eleven holidays in 2027. When one falls on a Saturday, it’s generally observed the Friday before, and when one falls on a Sunday, it’s observed the Monday after. In 2027 that affects Juneteenth, Independence Day, and Christmas.
| Holiday | Date | Observed |
|---|---|---|
| New Year’s Day | Friday, January 1 | Friday, January 1 |
| Martin Luther King Jr. Day | Monday, January 18 | Monday, January 18 |
| Presidents’ Day | Monday, February 15 | Monday, February 15 |
| Memorial Day | Monday, May 31 | Monday, May 31 |
| Juneteenth | Saturday, June 19 | Friday, June 18 |
| Independence Day | Sunday, July 4 | Monday, July 5 |
| Labor Day | Monday, September 6 | Monday, September 6 |
| Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples | Monday, October 11 | Monday, October 11 |
| Veterans Day | Thursday, November 11 | Thursday, November 11 |
| Thanksgiving | Thursday, November 25 | Thursday, November 25 |
| Christmas Day | Saturday, December 25 | Friday, December 24 |
One more date matters even though it belongs to 2028. New Year’s Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, which means Friday, December 31, 2027 is a federal holiday too. That one does a lot of work, as you’ll see below.
How to Maximize Vacation Days in 2027
A holiday Monday is already a three-day weekend, which is the version most people take. If you add the four working days after it, the weekend on the far side comes along for free, and you end up with nine days off in a row.
Nine days is the difference between a long weekend and an actual trip. It’s enough to fly somewhere far without half the trip being travel days, and enough that you stop counting hours on the way home.
9 Ways to Turn 4 PTO Days Into 9 Days Off in 2027
Each of these costs four PTO days and gives you nine consecutive days off, assuming your employer observes the holiday listed.
| Holiday | Take off | You’re away |
|---|---|---|
| MLK Jr. Day | January 19 to 22 | January 16 to 24 |
| Presidents’ Day | February 16 to 19 | February 13 to 21 |
| Memorial Day | June 1 to 4 | May 29 to June 6 |
| Juneteenth | June 14 to 17 | June 12 to 20 |
| Independence Day | July 6 to 9 | July 3 to 11 |
| Labor Day | September 7 to 10 | September 4 to 12 |
| Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples | October 12 to 15 | October 9 to 17 |
| Veterans Day | November 8, 9, 10 and 12 | November 6 to 14 |
| Thanksgiving | November 22, 23, 24 and 26 | November 20 to 28 |
Veterans Day and Thanksgiving both land on a Thursday, so those two work a little differently. You take the three days before and the Friday after, which still comes to four PTO days for nine days off.
Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples, Veterans Day, and Juneteenth are the three most likely to be working days at a private company, so those windows are worth checking against your own holiday schedule before you get attached to them. If your job doesn’t give you the holiday, that window costs one more PTO day.

Send Me the PTO PlannerHow to Get 16 Days Off With 8 PTO Days in December 2027
December has the biggest opportunity of the year, and it’s bigger than it first looks because two holidays get observed on Fridays.
Christmas falls on Saturday, December 25, so it’s observed Friday, December 24. New Year’s Day 2028 falls on a Saturday as well, so it’s observed Friday, December 31. Two free Fridays inside the same stretch, which is what makes this window pay out better than any other week on the calendar.
There are two ways to use it.
Get 10 Days Off With 4 PTO Days
Take off December 27 to 30. You’re away December 24 through January 2, which is ten days off for four PTO days. That’s the best trade on the entire 2027 calendar, and it costs the same four days as every other window in the table above.
Get 16 Days Off With 8 PTO Days
Take off December 20 to 23 and December 27 to 30. You’re away December 18 through January 2, which is sixteen days off for eight PTO days. This is the one to use if you want to go somewhere far, since it’s the only stretch all year long enough to justify a serious flight.
This is also the window where our two jobs stop matching. I’m off the last two weeks of the year either way, so that stretch costs me nothing, while Nick’s days come out of his PTO like any other week. If your company runs PTO on a first-come basis, this is the one to put in the day the calendar opens, because everyone else can do this math too. If the full two weeks gets turned down, the four-day version is the easier ask.
How We Plan Our PTO
We don’t try to use all nine windows. Between two jobs that isn’t happening, and a year of constant travel sounds more exhausting than fun.
Here’s what we actually do instead.
We pick two or three windows, not nine. Usually one in late winter, one in the fall, and one at the end of the year. That’s enough to feel like a full year of travel without spending every long weekend in an airport.
We match the window to the trip, not the other way around. We travel in shoulder season almost every year, so the Presidents’ Day window in February is our pick for somewhere warm or somewhere cold on purpose. The Labor Day, Columbus Day, and November windows are the ones we build real trips around, because early September through November is the best stretch of the year for Europe without the August crowds and the best road trip weather we get at home. The summer windows around Memorial Day, Juneteenth, and the Fourth of July are the ones we usually skip, since that’s when flights and hotels cost the most and everywhere we’d want to go is at its busiest. December is the only window long enough to go somewhere truly far.
We plan around the smaller number. Nick gets 15 PTO days a year and I get 20, so every trip we plan has to fit inside his 15. Before you pick a single window, figure out which of you has fewer days, because that’s the real budget for your year together.
How to Stretch Your PTO Days Even Further
We fly out the night before whenever we can. An evening flight after work is the closest thing to a free day we get all year. If we have Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday off, we’ll still leave Thursday after work, because that puts us on the ground and moving Friday morning instead of losing half of it to an airport.
Almost every Labor Day we go down to Charleston, South Carolina, to see friends, and the entire trip runs on a single PTO day. We fly out Thursday night after work, we get Friday, Saturday, and Sunday down there, and we fly home Monday on Labor Day itself. That’s four days in Charleston for one day of PTO.
The same trick works around four holidays in 2027. Take the Friday before or after, fly out the night before, and each of these costs exactly one PTO day.
| Holiday | Take off | You’re away | PTO days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Memorial Day | Friday, May 28 | May 28 to 31 | 1 |
| Fourth of July | Friday, July 2 | July 2 to 5 | 1 |
| Labor Day | Friday, September 3 | September 3 to 6 | 1 |
| Thanksgiving | Friday, November 26 | November 25 to 28 | 1 |
We leave a few days unspoken for. Something always comes up, whether it’s a wedding, a sick dog, or a long weekend we didn’t see coming. A year with zero flexible PTO left by August is its own kind of stressful.
We don’t both take every trip. Our jobs don’t always cooperate, and pretending otherwise is how you end up burning PTO on a trip one of you resents.

We made a free four-page planner with all of this in it. It has a holiday checklist so you can mark which days each of you actually gets off, the nine-day windows and one-PTO-day getaways with the exact dates to request, and a worksheet where you track both of your PTO balances side by side. You can fill it out right on your phone, and it’ll be in your inbox in about a minute.
How to Get the PTO Days You Want
The windows are only useful if you actually get them, and that part is mostly about timing rather than persuasion.
We request the days before we plan the trip. As soon as we pick one, the request goes in, even when we have no idea yet where we’re going. Approved days are something you can build a trip around, and days you never asked for are just a daydream.
